846,959. Packaging-machines. BARRACLOUGH Ltd., R. W., and BARRACLOUGH, R. W. Nov. 27, 1958 [Nov. 28, 1957], No. 37066/57. Class 94(1). Apparatus for sealing simultaneously the open ends of a number of filled plastic tubular containers comprises a pair of jaws to flatten the tubes so that a portion of the open ends projects above them and means to apply heat to the projecting portions to effect the seal. A second pair of jaws grip the heated portions to consolidate the seal. Groups of tubes may be fed to the sealing head by a conveyer or as shown may be placed in carriers 15 and slid manually along a channel 14 to position their ends between jaws 40, 41. A pedal 34 is pressed to engage a one revolution clutch driving a cam shaft 28 operating the various machine elements. The jaw 41 is advanced to flatten the tube ends against the jaw 40 and a gas valve 57 is opened to supply gas to a series of jets in a pipe 65. Ignition of the jets by a pilot jet (not shown), heats the tube ends which are then gripped by crimping jaws 47, 48 to complete the seal. The two sets of jaws and the crimping jaws' pivot shaft 49 are water cooled.
