Abstract

1485942 Heat shrinking sleeves on to bottles OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 2 March 1976 08299/76 Heading B5A In apparatus for heat shrinking sleeves on to bottles B, the bottles are carried by chucks 13 rotatably depending from brackets 22 which are driven around a closed path by chains 14, 15. The bottles, at one end of their path, pass over a rotatory turret 10a carrying mandrels 29 on which the heat shrinkable sleeves have been formed. The sleeves are transferred upwardly on to bottles by collars 30 reciprocable around the mandrels by the action of a fixed cam 33 which engages followers 33a carried by rods 31 themselves attached to the collars. The sleeve covered bottles are passed through a first heater 39, by which a narrow band 70 of each sleeve is shrunk on to the bottle to hold the sleeve on the bottle, and then through a second heater 12 by which the sleeve is fully shrunk on to the bottle. The first heater comprises a pair of opposed nozzle means 39a, 39b each having an elongated outlet slot 52 for directing hot air from delivery tubes 59, 60, on to a narrow band of the sleeve. The hot air is provided by a burner 62 fed by a blower 65. During passage of each chuck through the first heater, the chuck, and thus the bottle and sleeve, is rotated by co-operation of a wheel 13c carried by the chuck with a fixed rail 72. Foamed polystyrene or polyethylene sheet may be used.
