Abstract

[Also in Division B8] Apparatus for sealing plastics film comprises a pair of jaws 10, 11 adapted to close on the film to be sealed, one jaw providing an abutment and the other carrying a heater 24 heated by an electrical resistance element 25, a cooler 26 and means operative after the jaws have closed first to present the heater 24 to one face of the film to be sealed while its other face is supported by the abutment and then to withdraw the heater 24 rapidly and present the cooler 26 to the one face of the film while the other face remains supported by the abutment. The jaws 10, 11 are periodically moved in to grip and transversely seal a tube of thermoplastic wrapping material, moved down to advance the tube, then separated and raised to their original positions. The jaw 10 carries the heater 24 and the cooler 26 supported at their ends on pivots 28, 29, respectively. Slotted arms 30, 31 are attached to the opposite ends of the heater 24 and the cooler 26, respectively, and engage runners attached to a lever 34 on a shaft 35 oscillated by pneumatic cylinders 36. Upward movement of the pistons in the cylinders 36 brings the cooler 26 into operative position and retracts the heater 24 and downward movement causes reverse action. Rubber abutment strips 39 are provided on the jaw 11. During the cooling period, a knife 40 is propelled by a pneumatic cylinder 41 from the jaw 11 into a slot 42 in the cooler 26 to cut through the seal. Air may be blown through a channel 43 in the cooler 26.
