Abstract

1356792 Seaming non-metallic sheet material WRIGHT MACHINERY CO Ltd 9 Aug 1971 [8 May 1970] 22419/70 Heading B5K [Also in Division B8] A tube 16 is transversely sealed and severed in a form-fill-and-seal packaging machine by jaws 20, 21 comprising a pair of sealing members 29, 30 movable towards and away from each other, a pair of grippers 49, 50 on each side of the sealing members, means to sever the tube across a heat sealed zone or between a pair of such zones and means to move the seals into contact with a cooling surface located between a sealing member and the grippers. The member 29 contains a resistance or impulse heating element and may be covered by glass fibre impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene. The member 30 has a facing block 36 of silicone rubber, is biased by springs into the retracted position shown in body 37, and can be hydraulically or pneumatically advanced. The member 30 may include a heated element to make gusset seals. The tube is severed by a hot or cold wire 31 on the member 29 or by a knife. After retraction of the member 30 and severing of the tube further movement together of the jaws cause the seals S to be moved against bars 34 cooled by air or water. The jaws as they grip the tube are moved downwardly to pull the tube through the machine.
