Abstract

910,584. Packaging. BARRACLOUGH Ltd., R. W., and BARRACLOUGH, R. W. Jan. 11, 1961 [Jan. 12, 1960], No. 1078/60. Class 94(1). Apparatus for evacuating and subsequently sealing a plurality of containers e.g., polythene bags containing foodstuff comprises spaced nozzle assemblies 20, Fig. 1, each having a cam-actuated jaw 22 and carried by an endless chain 14 running over sprockets 15, 41 mounted on a driven shaft 12 and a face shaft 13 respectively, a rotary slide valve 30, Fig. 2, secured to said sprocket 15 and having radially extending flexible conduits 29 each connected to a bored conduit 27 slidable within a block 26 which is also secured to the sprocket 15 and extends into a flexible portion 24 of the nozzle assembly 20 in register therewith, a plurality of bag-receiving tables 43 in register with said nozzle assemblies and carried by an endless chain 42 running parallel to the chain 14 and passing over a sprocket 40 secured to said shaft 12 and which carries radially slidable jaws 45 each having a cam roller 46 running in a track 47a of a stationary plate 47 whereby the bag mouth is pressed into sealing engagement with the nozzle 20b throughout the interval during which the nozzle is sequentially connected to a vacuum pipe 33, a nitrogen supply pipe 34, Fig. 7, and a second vacuum pipe 35 through the bore 27a conduit 29. rotary valve 30 and a stationary valve ring 32 having recesses 32b, 32c, 32d connected to said pipes 33, 34, 35; each bag at the end of its semi-circular path and prior to falling from the work table 43 being heat-sealed by being pressed by a hot roller 50 against flats formed around the periphery of plate 44. During the above described cycle of operations each bag is maintained in its stretched condition by its base being held between a lower jaw 61a secured to a wheel 60 keyed to the shaft 12 and an upper jaw 61b which is pivoted to the jaw 61a and is actuated by a roller 63 running in a cam track 57a of a stationary cam disc 57.
