Abstract

846,779. Catheters. ODDO, V. J. Nov. 8, 1957, No. 34912/57. Class 81(2). A haemostatic catheter for use following prostatectomy comprises a drainage tube 10 which carries a pair of inflatable torus-shaped balloons 14 15 held together by a common integral wall 16 or a connecting membrane, so that when inflated they can exert pressure on the vesical neck as well as on the prostate bed. The catheter comprises a tube 10 having a closed distal end 12 adjacent which are openings 13 communicating with a central drainage channel 11. Balloons 14, 15 having a common wall 16 are disposed near the distal end 12 of the catheter, the balloons 14, 15 being inflatable through a single duct 17 formed or embedded in the wall of the tube 10. In use the balloon 15 nearest the distal end 12 is located in the bladder and presses against one side of the vesical neck, the second balloon 14 presses against the other side of the vesical neck and the common wall 16 presses against the vesical neck so that bleeding following prostatectomy is checked. In a modification the two balloons communicate with one another, the wall portion joining them being more resistant to inflation than the balloons themselves. Each balloon may be separate from the other and be inflated through a separate inflating duct, the walls of the balloons being interconnected by a flexible elastic membrane which presses against the vesical neck when the balloons are inflated. The space between the balloons enclosed by the membrane may be independently inflated through a third inflating duct.
