Abstract

1,113,484. Catheters; administration of gases. WILLIAM WARNE & CO. Ltd. 19 Oct., 1966 [29 Oct.. 1965]. No. 45903/65. Headings A5R and A5T. In a tube, for insertion into the trachea or other passage for the administration of an anaesthetic cr other gas, having part of its length surrounded by a flexible bag joined to the tube, the interior of the tube is in commun-- cation with the interior of the bag; formed within the bore of the tube is a constriction which is situated, when the tube is operatively in position, distally of the communication between the tube and the bag so that, when gas is supplied to the tube, a pressure differential is established in the tube across the constriction to cause the bag to inflate and to effect a seal against the wall of the trachea or other passage. As illustrated, the ends 4 of a bag 3 are joined to a tube 1 which communicates through one or mcre passages 5 with the interior of the bag, a constriction 7 being formed in the tube so that, when gas is supplied to and through the tube in the direction of the arrows, the bag is caused to inflate as shown by dotted lines 8. The bag, which preferably is arranged towards one end 2 of the tube, may either be sealed to or be formed integral with the tube. The bag, which may be made either of expandable or of non-expandable material, preferably is made of rubber or of a plastics material; the tube preferably is flexible and may be made of rubber cr of a plastics material.
