Abstract

1495648 Tracheal tube K L DAVIDSON 12 Feb 1975 [6 June 1974] 5901/75 Heading A5T A tube capable of use for both tracheal and oesophageal intubation comprises an elongate tubular body 12 with a lumen 15 extending between its ends, means 34 in an upper portion 14 for selectively sealing said lumen, and means 23 carried on a lower portion 13 for forming a seal with the walls of a body canal when inserted therein. As shown this last means 23 is an inflatable cuff Three embodiments disclose different constructions of an insert 16 providing said means for selectively sealing the lumen. In each case the insert also provides spaced between said meeans 23 and the outer end 17 of the apparatus, channels of communication (in Fig. 2 via slot 36 and holes 18) between the interior and the exterior of the tube. The tube. is used with the lumen sealed and the said channels open as an oesophageal tube in which case a face mask 31 is preferably included. Means 37 are provided for closing the said channels and with the channels closed and the lumen open the tube may be used for endotracheal intubation.
