A catheter, which may be inserted into the trachea, comprises an outer tube 1 and inner tube which extends through and beyond the extremities of the outer tube 1, the inner tube being a compound tube having two parallel ducts 3 and 4 of which duct 4 extends to an apertured distal end 2 and duct 3 terminates adjacent the distal end just outside the outer tube 1 in a balloon-like portion 5 capable of being inflated by gas or liquid pressure to form a cushion protecting the end of the outer tube 1. The compound tube may comprise a pair of tubes arranged concentrically one within the other, or a tube divided into two ducts by a septum extending lengthwise of the tube. The outer tube which may have an internal groove at the distal end into which the balloon portion can be expanded, may taper towards its distal end. Duct 7 is connected to inflation, pressure relief means also being provided. Duct 8 may be connected to suction or breathing means or to means for introducing liquids or gases. The tubes are flexible.
