Abstract
1447987 Respiratory appliances E CARDEN 6 Feb 1974 [10 March 1973] 11692/73 Heading A5R and A5T A ventilating device for use in anesthesiology comprises a cannula 10 open at both ends and short enough to be entirely inserted into a patient's trachea, an inflatable cuff 17 surrounding and carried by the cannula and a gas supply tube 14 of smaller diameter than the cannula and secured to it and terminating within the cannula in an open end 16, Fig. 3, directed towards one end of the cannula. The cannula 10 is preferably made from stiff plastics tubing and is provided with wedge-like ends 11, 15. The cannula 10 may be straight, as shown, or gently curved. The tube 14 may be of flexible plastics tubing. It is connected at its free end to a valve 25, operated manually by a push button 26. The valve 25 is connected in turn to a pressure reducer 28, connected to an oxygen cylinder (not shown). The cuff 17 is made of a resilient material such as latex or soft silicone elastomer, and is provided with a cuffinflating tube 23 for connection to a compressed air supply. In use during throat operations. the device is inserted, outlet end 11 first, into a patient's trachea below the vocal chords, by means of a special applicator formed from stainless steel rod (not shown). The device is secured in position by inflation of the cuff 17. The patient's lungs may then be ventilated, by pressing the button 26, while expiration from the lungs can occur by way of the lumen through the cannula 10. The device may be removed, after deflating the cuff, by again depressing the button 26, which causes the device to be blown backwards out of the throat. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 3 the tube 14 is passed through an opening 13 in the wall of the cannula 10, and the inflatable cuff is formed from two thin tubes 18, 19 bonded together over circumferential bands (20, 21), Fig. 4 (not shown). In another embodiment, Figs, 5 and 6 (not shown), the tube (14) passes into the cannula (10) at its inlet end (15), and is attached by an adhesive to the inner wall of the cannula. The cuff (17) is formed from a single length of tubing (31), bonded to the cannula at the ends (32, 33), and the inflation tube (23) is accommodated in a groove in the wall of the cannula, so that the two tubes (14, 23) do not produce a bulge. A blanking-off plug (38) for the inflation tube (23) may be provided, so that the cuff may be disconnected from the compressed air supply but maintained in its inflated state.
