Abstract

1,026,755. Catheters. F. E. B. FOLEY. Jan. 4, 1963, No. 549/63. Heading A5R. A self-inflating bag catheter comprises a distention duct which is sealed at the proximal end and has retained within it under compression forces at said proximal end an inflating fluid which upon being released from said compressive forces passes through the duct to inflate the bag. In Fig. 1 the catheter comprises hollow shaft 12 having drainage inlets 14 adjacent the distal end 15, which inlets 14 open into drainage channel 16. Extending along shaft 12 is also distention duct 20 which opens under sleeve or bag 18 at the distal end, and into divergent tube 22 at the proximal end. The tube 22 is sealed by plug 26 and contains rupturable capsule 28 containing the inflating fluid. A similar embodiment is shown in Fig. 5 except that the distention duct 42 extends the whole length of shaft 37. The inflating fluid may be contained in a portion of tube 22 or 48 which is sealed off by plug 26 or 46 and a frangible plug. The fluid (e.g. perfluorocyclobutane, carbon dioxide or nitrogen) may be released by flexing or squeezing the tube 22 or 48. The catheter shaft and bag may be made of rubber latex or silicone rubber, and the capsules of glass or stainless steel.
