Abstract
<PICT:0846368/IV(b)/1> Acetylene is produced by the partial combustion of hydrocarbons with oxygen using a pressure of at least 2 atmospheres. In a preferred embodiment, methane at high pressure is decompressed to 16 atmospheres in a pressure reducing valve 1 and after pre-heating to about 500 DEG C. in a heat exchanger 4 is introduced into an ejector 6. Oxygen at 1 atmosphere is preheated to 500 DEG C. in a heat exchanger 4 and also introduced into the ejector 6. A mixture of 62% methane and 38% oxygen at 3 atmospheres is passed into a combustion chamber 8 where the temperature is raised to 1400 DEG C. The flame is extinguished with water sprayed through nozzles 9 by a pump 10, carbon black being discharged through an outlet 11. The gas containing 8,5-9,0% of acetylene is cooled in a scrubber 13 and the water which collects at the bottom at a temperature of 120 DEG C. releases its heat to a heat exchanger 12, where the selective solvent used for the absorption of acetylene is heated. The gas is cooled to 0 DEG C. in a tower 16 and is then washed with the selective solvent.
