Abstract

1-Acetoxy-1-cyanobut-2-ene is thermally split to form 1-cyanobuta-1,3-diene and acetic acid by suddenly heating it, within a fraction of a second, by means of a hot current of inert gas having a temperature above 500 DEG C. to the necessary fission temperature of above 400 DEG C., the fission reaction is allowed to proceed at the fission temperature for 0.5-10 seconds, and the issuing gas mixture is cooled, washed with water, and the cyanobutadiene and acetic acid separated by distillation. The preferred fission temperature is 450-650 DEG C. Suitable inert gases, which are preferably initially at 700-1000 DEG C., are argon, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, combustion gases, or burnt gases of carbon monoxide, methane or illuminating gas. The gaseous mixture leaving the reaction chamber is preferably cooled to 20-70 DEG C. by spraying in water or aqueous acetic acid. The cyanobutadiene and acetic acid are separated by distillation, the former as an azeotrope with water; a polymerisation inhibitor is preferably present.
