A wrapping machine has a detector acting, upon failure of the supply of wrapping material, to divert unwrapped articles along a different path from that followed by wrapped ones. The machine wraps rectangular articles by the known method of feeding each of them against a wrapper 64 which it carries through folding means 69. In normal operation wrapped articles arrive on a platform 2 where they are arrested by a moveable stop 34, the platform rising to push each article beyond retaining pawls 3. When a stack of three articles rests on the pawls, a reciprocating pusher 5 forces the top two onto a platform 4 for subsequent cartonning &c. In the event of wrapper failure, a feeler 45, raised periodically and allowed to fall to engage the wrapper portion protruding from one end of the article, enters an aperture 44 in the table 1 its lower end operates a switch 54 whereby a solenoid 55 displaces a peg 22 of a timing drum 21. The displaced peg trips a pawl, Fig. 3 (not shown), and declutches the shaft 26 bearing cams operating the platform 2 and stop 34, whereby the platform and stop remain lowered. Unwrapped articles travel across the platform to a shoot 35 where an oscillating pusher plate 36 transfers them to a stacking table 39. Articles may be directed without wrapper failure by normal operation of a switch 70.
