Abstract

In a machine for binding piles of flat objects either once or twice, moving piles of the objects actuate means to arrest piles at the binding station and start the binding operation, and actuate means to stop a delivery conveyer. Further means actuated by the tying mechanism, which includes a compressor, starts the conveyers, and a selector switch determines whether one or two binding operations are performed. Piles 25, 26 of flat objects e.g. bags, cardboard sheets &c. are moved by a belt or other conveyer 1 on to belt or other conveyers 6, 7 at the binding station, where, for a single binding operation, they contact a switch 24 adjustable longitudinally of the conveyer which stops the conveyer 1, to form a gap between adjacent piles. Another adjustable switch 23 is then contacted, this stops conveyers 6, 7 and actuates the binding mechanism (not detailed) including a compressor. After binding, a movement of the compressor actuates a further switch (not shown) to re-start conveyers 1, 6, 7, to discharge the bundle on conveyer 22. For two bindings another switch, which may be identical with 23, is changed from a single tying operation position to a double tying one by the selector through a multiple switch. Switch 24 is now made inoperative and the new switch 23, when contacted by the pile, stops conveyers 1, 6, 7, and starts the binding operation, after which a switch is contacted by the compressor to re-start conveyers 6, 7. The bundle is then moved until it releases a switch 27, which only operates when a pile is depressing the switch 23, and causes the conveyers 6, 7 to stop and the binding means to operate for a second time. A switch is then actuated by the binding means to start conveyers 1, 6, 7. In another embodiment, the piles are stopped by raising bars (20), Fig. 4 (not shown), between the belts (17) of conveyers 6, 7, to lift the piles from the conveyers.
