Abstract

[Also in Division F2] Packages are supplied, e.g. to a wire-applying machine, by means of an intermittently-driven belt conveyer 7, the trailing end of each package depressing a movable plate 22 as it leaves a threshold 21 and thereby actuating a solenoid (30), Fig. 2, to disengage a brake 19 which allows a first cam disc 18 to be rotated and so operate the wire-tying mechanism through a switch 20. The cam disc 18 and similar discs 17 and 16 are each driven by a shaft 15 through spring- loaded members (23) (see Division F2) which slip on the shaft 15 so long as the brake 19 is applied. Each disc 16-18 has a pin 26-28 respectively. The pin 28 of the disc 18 holds the disc 17 against rotation, and similarly the pin 27 on the disc 17 holds the disc 16. The brake 19 initially engages the pin 28, until disengaged by the action of the package on the plate 21. On release of the pin 28 all three discs begin to rotate: the brake 19 then returns to hold the pin 27 of disc 17, thereby preventing discs 17 and 16 from further rotation. Disc 18 continues to rotate, and by means of cams a and b actuates the switch 20 to cause the trailing end of a package and the leading end of a subsequent package to be tied by wire from a frame 5. Further actuation of the plate 21 releases in turn each of discs 17 and 16 to cause further ties to be effected on the last and successive packages. The machine operates continuously. Rollers 6 are all retracted as the wire is applied. A third, central tie may be effected on each package by the inclusion of a plate which pivots as the centre of the package passes over it, thereby operating a circuit to a separate set of cam discs. Again, sets of cam discs may be employed to tie packages at varying distances from their ends, the set corresponding to the size of package being selected automatically, e.g. by the weight of the package.
