338,714. Crosby, R. S., and Newton, F.E. Nov. 7, 1929. Packeting nails and the like in cartons.-The machine feeds, counts, and delivers articles such as screws, bolts, nails, &c. into cartons. The articles slide down a shoot 2, Fig. 2, and drop vertically into a runway 3, where each is engaged by a slide 4 and pushed past a counting finger 18, and drops into a box 17. The slide is forked so that, in the event of no article being fed, the finger is not engaged. The finger is connected by a link 22 to a rocker 23 carrying a pawl 28 in engagement with a ratchet wheel 26 fast on the shaft of a pinion 27, gearing with a pinion 30. Each time an article is fed, the pinion 30 is advanced a step, and, at the completion of a revolution, a trip finger 32 thereon engages a latch 35, which under the influence of a spring 36, moves the links 37, 38 to carry a gate 40 across the end of the shoot 2 and stop the feed. During the filling operation, the box 17 is vibrated by pins 55, Fig. 7, projecting through the table 11 and actuated by arms 50, 53 from a serrated disc 48. Upon the release of the latch 35, the vibrating mechanism is thrown out of engagement with the shaft 46 by a lever 44 actuated from the latch, and at the same time a disc 58 is clutched to the shaft 46. The disc carries feed members 59 on its periphery adapted to project through a slot in the table 11 and to feed a box away from the filling point so that another may be put in position. The disc 58 also carries cam lugs 60 which engage a bar on the latch 35 and reset it so that the feed can recommence, the disc 58 is stopped, and the vibrating -mechanism is restarted.
