[Class 94 (i).] In machines for effecting the preliminary arrangement of cigarettes and the like for packeting, and in which a series of vertical receiving partitions are disposed beneath a hopper, the cigarettes in the hopper are maintained at an appropriate level by devices actuated by a movable wall of the hopper. The cigarettes gravitate from the main portion 1 of the hopper to a lateral receiving chamber 2 and pass down into the vertical partitions 12. If the level in the chamber 2 is sufficient, a movable wall 11 is urged by the pressure of the cigarettes in a clockwise direction about its pivot 8 so that an associated pawl 9 engages a ratchet wheel 7 on a shaft 6. This prevents the rotation of a sprocket wheel on the same shaft and a feeding roller 3, actuable from the sprocket by a chain, is immobilized. If the level in the chamber falls so that an insufficient number of cigarettes is present the wall 11 is moved by the weight of the pawl 9 so that the latter is disengaged, and a friction clutch between a sprocket 15 and the shaft 6 becomes operative so that the feeding roller 3 is rotated to pass more cigarettes into the chamber 2 until the pressure is again sufficient to cause the wall 11 to move the pawl 9 into engagement with the ratchet 7 to stop the feed. Thepawl may be positively disengaged at intervals by a cam 25 to assist the operation, and may be subject to the action of a spring. The feeding roller 3 may be replaced by vibratory or oscillating feed devices.
