Abstract

333,939. Dobson, B. P., and Pickup, J. H. May 23, 1929. Openers etc.; feeding openers &c.-The rate of feed of cotton &c. through a hopper feeder 24, Fig. 1, is caused to control the feed through a hopper feeder 14 by means of a finger 30, Figs. 1 and 4, which when defected by accumulated cotton brings a stop 48 into the path of a pawl 40 reciprocated by a cam 36 so as to hold this pawl and a companion pawl 44 out of engagement with a ratchet wheel 41 which is then free to revolve under the influence of a weight 60, so that through the links 54, 56, 58, 59 it moves a flexible element 62 extending across an intermediate horizontal opener 16, to a hook on a bell-crank 75, Fig. 2, which operates the belt fork rod 72 of the speed gear 22 of the hopper feeder 14 and opener 16, so that the feed is reduced. The ratchet wheel 41 is normally rotated step by step by the pawl 40 so as gradually to speed up the feed to a maximum corresponding to a gap 42 in the teeth of the ratchet wheel 41. Pawl 44 serves to prevent reverse movement of the ratchet wheel 41 until both pawls are held out of engagement by the stop 48. The two pawls may be replaced by two friction blocks similarly actuated. The feed of the intermediate machine may be controlled directly by attaching a rod to the arm 58, Fig. 4, which operates the belt fork of the intermediate machine. Machines of different kinds may be thus combined, e.g., hopper bale breakers, the hopper feeds of openers, porcupine openers, openers which make laps, soft waste openers, or exhaust openers.
