Cigarette-making machines.-The rate at which tobacco is fed to a cigarette-making machine is varied by means of a weighing mechanism receiving at intervals batches of cigarettes from the machine. The weighing mechanism itself is described in Specification 260,744, [Class 143, Weighing-apparatus]. To the beam 1 is attached an arm 4 having steps 5, 6, 7 corresponding to light, normal, and heavy cigarettes, and engaged bv a feeler 8 carried by an arm 9 which, by links and levers 10, 11, 12, 13, is connected to the feed control mechanism. The control shaft 27 is connected to the regulating mechanism of the variable-speed gear which drives the feeding mechanism. Loose worm-wheels 29, 30 are driven in opposite directions from a chain 34 and sprockets 33. Cam discs 35, 36 integral with the wheels 29, 30 carry driving pawls 37, which may be held by catch pawls 38 from engagement with ratchet heels 40 keyed to the shaft 27. Rollers 41 on the catch pawls 38 engage with a camshaft 43 unless the latter is moved by reason of the position of the feeler 8 to bring one of a pair of flats 45, 46 adjacent to but clear of the path of the roller 41. When, however, the roller hits the cylindrical part of the cam, the catch pawl 38 releases the driving pawl 37, which then rotates the ratchet wheel 40 and shaft 27. A cam 48 throws the pawl 37 away from the wheel 40, after about a quarter revolution, to be re-engaged by the catch-pawl 38. The period of engagement of the members 37, 40 is adjusted by means of a quadrant mounted on a bevel wheel in gear with bevel wheels integral with the cams 48.
