Abstract

845,350. Horizontal boring and facing-machines. KEARNS & CO. Ltd., H. W. Feb. 12, 1959, No. 4929/59. Class 83 (3). A horizontal, boring and facing- machine is provided with means for giving the boring or travelling-spindle a rapid traverse, comprising a differential gear in the drive-transmission and a braked electric motor for driving the differential. The boring-spindle 4, Fig. 1, is moved axially by a rack 8 secured to the spindle by a collar 6, 7. The rack is engaged by a pinion 9 which is normally driven by a shaft 12 from a hand wheel 13, or automatically from a variable-speed transmissionshaft 16, helical gears 15, cross-shaft 14 and worm-gearing. A differential gear 17 is introduced into the drive to shaft 12. The planet-carrier of the differential is driven by worm-gearing 19 from an electric motor 18, Fig. 2. The motor may be of the reversible sliding-rotor type and is capable of being braked, the motor being held stationary for normal spindle-feed. Quick traverse is obtained in either direction by switching on the motor drive, and the normal feed may be left engaged.
