Abstract

603,451. Lathes. RAUSSER & CIE. July 4, 1945, No. 17071. Convention date, Oct. 17, 1944. [Class 83 (iii)] A small lathe, the tailstock of which is adapted to be axially displaced, independently of the position of the main saddle, over the entire length of the bed is characterized in that the main saddle extends below and across the underside of the bed and is guided on both the sides thereof. The lathe bed is of H-shaped cross-section, Fig. 9, supporting a U-shaped saddle 12. The top of the saddle is adapted to take attachments for milling and drilling and has an easily removable cross-slide for facilitating this. The spindle 2 is driven by belt-gearing, Fig. 12, giving stepless speed changes and including an electric motor 7. The expanding and contracting pulleys are spring-pressed together and are carried on the outer members of a stirrup 66 which is rocked to obtain the speed changes by a lever 3. The feed shaft and lead screw are located on the centre line of the machine under the bed, and the drive from the spindle to the former is through a rotatable housing 65, Fig. 11, which is indexible to bring different gear trains into mesh with the spindle and the feed shaft 36. The lead screw is driven from the feed shaft through gearing and a hand control which enables the lead screw to be driven in a forward direction, reversed, or the drive disengaged; additionally, as shown in Fig. 3, the feed shaft 36 may be coupled to the lead-screw nut 45 by sliding the gear-wheel 51<SP>1</SP>, integral with a sleeve keyed to the feed shaft, into mesh with the wheel 45<SP>1</SP> integral with the nut. The control handle 15, Fig. 1, for this operation is linked to a stirrup which at the same time uncouples the nut from its support. Movement in the opposite direction to disengage this drive couples the nut to its housing member so that rotation of the lead-screw by hand or automatically is effective in traversing the saddle. Hand operation of the latter is arranged for by providing a graduated hand wheel 23 on the tailstock end of the lead screw. The tailstock 18 is arranged to traverse the whole of the bed and be fed past the saddle and is located centrally in the bed ways 92, 93, Fig. 9.
