Abstract

A machine tool capstan (23) is mounted on a cross slide (7) and a longitudinal slide (2) and carries on four of its six sides conventional tool holders (25). An auxiliary turret (33) is in the remaining space. Various tool tips (26) are carried on the end of the turret and are rotated into position by the shaft (81) which can be moved along its axis by a hydraulic cylinder (83) thus engaging the shaft (81) with a set of spur gears (108, 107, 108, 31). The shaft for the spur gear (31) is driven by a hydraulic motor. The main capstan can be immobilised and then the drive is transmitted to the auxiliary turret. When freed the main capstan turns and there is no rotation of the spur gears.
