845,272. Lathe details; lathe and like centres. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Aug. 31, 1957 [Sept. 22, 1955], No. 26682/56. Class 83 (3). A tailstock 10 having a housing 12 incorporates a disc spring 54 to take the thrust due to thermal expansion. The housing contains a slidable sleeve 21 supporting, by thrust bearings 32, 33, a spindle 31 holding a centre 38. A feed screw 45, attached to a hand wheel 49, engages a nut 47 in the sleeve 21 to adjust the centre. The outer periphery of the spring contacts an end cover 42, attached to the housing, and the inner portion abuts a flange of a sleeve 53 on the screw 45. Expansion of the work 11 deflects the spring, and the pressure is measured by a tapered gauge 58, inserted between the hand wheel and the cover 42, and calibrated in inches or directly in pounds. A pad 25 is adjusted against the sleeve 21 by a screw 26 to take up play. Lubricant is retained in the bearings by a cover 36.
