Abstract

844,899. Beet-topping machines. RAE, J. S. April 24, 1959 [Feb. 20, 1958], No. 5488/58. Class 6(3). A machine for topping and tailing beets comprises topping knives 4 floatingly mounted on a disc 5 for rotation in a circular path in a forwardly and downwardly inclined plane so as to sever the tops by a sideways stroke, and a driven tailing disc-knife 14, behind the topping knives, rotating in an oblique plane in the opposite direction to the topping knives to throw the roots to the opposite side of the croprow. The machine comprises a frame 7 mounted on skids 20 and supported by tractor draughtlinks (not shown). The discs 5, 14 are driven by jointed shafts 6, 15, from gearing 25, 26 connected to the tractor power take-off. Floating movement of the topping knives is controlled by resilient pivoted arms 10 which support a bearing 12 behind the disc 5.
