Abstract
825,386. Agricultural implements. CHRISTENSEN, P. Jan. 6, 1958 [Jan. 21, 1957], No. 403/58. Class 6(1). A device for thinning plants is provided with an indicator device to indicate the plants that will be retained in a row and the cutters are arranged to be moved forwards or backwards so that the plants to be retained can be selected. As shown the cutter assembly is mounted on a frame 3 which is pivoted to a frame 1 attached to a tractor so that the cutter assembly can be moved forwards or backwards. Cutters 12 are mounted on a shaft 8 and the two lower cutters shown in Fig. 1, are widely spaced to allow plants to be retained in the row, the remaining cutters being so spaced as to cut out the remaining plants in the row. A wheel 19 driven by gearing from the shaft 8 is provided with pins 22 which contact the ground and indicate the plants to be retained. If the pins 22 indicate that no suitable plants are available, the frame 3 may be moved forwards to bring the pin contacting the ground opposite suitable plants which will be retained. The frame is then moved back to its original position by springs 25. In a modification the pins are mounted in an endless chain mounted in two inclined wheels driven by gearing from the cutter shaft. The rotatable cutters may be replaced by pendulum mounted cutters.
