Abstract

927,812. Topping beets. K. C. SHOTBOLT, and R. A. SHOTBOLT. Feb. 7, 1962 [Nov. 15, 1960], No. 39162/60. Class 6(3). A beet-topping device comprises a frame 5 attachable to a wheeled vehicle (not shown) so as to be swingable about a horizontal axis, the frame carrying a height-sensing rotor 1 engageable with the beet-crowns and a knife 6 positionable by the rotor, which rotates about a longitudinal axis and is formed on its periphery with spiral grooves. In the form shown the frame is H-shaped, the legs carrying bearings 4 for the rotor-shaft 3 and a bracket 8 in which the stem of the knife 6 is adjustably mounted. Behind the rotor are flails 2 to sweep aside cut tops. The rotor surface is barrel-shaped and formed with a spiral fin. Drive to the rotor is taken from the vehicle through a universal joint.
