Abstract
807,847. Harvesting machines. JOHNSON, T. S. May 9, 1957 [June 7, 1956], No. 17610/56. Class 6(3). Digging mechanism for a potato harvester comprises a floating digging unit, pivoted at its rear end and supported at its front end by a single ground roller 9 in the form of a cylinder having a re-entrant circumference, the unit including a digging share 2 supplying material to a lifting conveyer 3. A frame 1 pivoted at 4 on the main frame 5 of the harvester may be raised at the front end by means of a hand lever 6 mounted on the main frame 5 and connected to a cross-bar of the frame 1 by a chain 7 passing round a quadrant 8. The level of the roller 9 is adjustable by a lever 10 co-operating with a quadrant 11, so controlling the depth to which the share 2 digs. Freely rotating coulter discs 12 are mounted on arms 15 at the lower end of cranked rods 13 which are slidable and rotatable in clamps 14 carried by the frame 1. In a modification the rollers 9 may comprise two end discs mounted apart on a bush, a disc of smaller diameter situated mid-way between them, and a number of bent V-shaped rods mounted radially round the roller, their apexes welded to the smaller disc and their ends welded to the end discs.
