Abstract
844,889. Sewing machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Nov. 21, 1958 [Nov. 23, 1957]. No. 36565/57. Class 112 A zig-zag sewing machine comprises a reciprocable needle bar which is adapted to be oscillated about its axis and carries a needle the axis of which is eccentric to the axis of the needle bar, a crank arm attached to the needle bar, a reciprocable slide bar engaged with the crank arm, and a bell crank lever one arm of which is engagable with the slide bar and the other arm of which is engaged with cam mechanism coupled to a driving shaft of the sewing machine. The needle-driving shaft I is coupled by gearing 2 to a shaft 3 carrying a cam 4 engaged with a roller 5 on one arm of a bell crank lever 6. The other arm of the latter is engagable with a notch 8 in an arm 9 pivoted at 10 to a reciprocable slide bar 11. A pin 12 projects from slide 11 and enters a hole in a crank arm 13 fixed to the needle bar 14 which carries an eccentric needle. When arm 9 is lowered to engage notch 8 with roller 7. rotation of shaft I effects reciprocation of slide bar 11 and oscillation of the needle bar 14 to produce zig-zag stitching. For straight stitching, bar 9 is raised to engage notch 8 with an abutment 15 on a fixed arm 16.
