Class 112 In a zig-zag sewing machine having the axis of the needle bar parallel to the pivotal axis of a needle bar gate, a pitman connected to the gate for imparting oscillation thereto, a rotary pattern cam, cam follower means, and means adjustably connecting the pitman to the follower means, a coiled torsion spring, arranged coaxially of said pivotal axis, has one end anchored to the gate and the other end anchored to an element arranged coaxially of said pivotal axis and releasably secured in angularly adjusted position relatively thereto. A vertical needle bar 5 reciprocated in a gate 12 pivoted on a fixed vertical pin 17. One end of a pitman 26 is adjustably secured by a screw 28 to a bracket 27 pivoted on a pin 30 fixed in the gate 12. The other end of pitman 26 passes through a slot in a plate 33 and carries at its extremity a block 37. Plate 33 is pivoted at 34 to a bracket 35 pivoted on a fixed pin 36. A cam follower member 54 is pivoted intermediately at 56 to plate 33, is slidably connected at one end to pin 36, and carries at its other end a pin 55 adapted to cooperate with a rotary pattern cam 45. A torsion spring 57, which is coiled about pin 17, has one end 58 anchored to gate 12 and the other end 59 anchored to a collar 60 fixed in angularly adjusted position on pin 17 by a screw 61. Spring 57 serves to bias gate 12 angularly to engage block 37 with plate 33, and thereby engage follower pin 55 with cam 45. A bell crank lever 38 carries on one arm a pin 39 engaged in a slot 40 in pitman 26, and on the other arm a handle 41. Manipulation of the latter thereby serves to move pitman 26 along the slot in plate 33 for varying the stitch width. A handle 44 carried by bracket 35 serves to swing the latter about pin 36 for varying the centre line of the stitches. Specifications 887,461 and 887,462 are referred to.
