Abstract

637,806. Sewing-machines. GREIST MANUFACTURING CO. April 1, 1947, No. 8783. Convention date, April 12, 1946. [Class 112] Buttonhole-sewing attachments. The work-holding plate is both oscillated and fed by an oscillating lever through means carried by the lever and the plate ; in a particular form, the lever carries a pinion engaging a buttonhole-shaped rack on the work-plate, the pinion being caused to rotate slowly by the oscillation of the lever to produce the feed motion. In the embodiment shown in plan, the work is held and fed by a foot 48 on the end of a plate 45 which is carried on the underside of a plate 10, fixed to the presser-bar, and guided by a slot engaging a pin 38 on an arm 36 carried on the plate 10 ; the left-hand end of the plate 45 carries an inter-changeable rack 56 formed according to the size and shape of the buttonhole to be sewn. A standard on the plate 10 carries a cam 13 rotatable through ratchet gear by a lever 16 engaging a screw on the needle-bar, and a lever 23, pivoted on the plate 10 at 24, is oscillated by the cam 13. The other end of the lever carries a ratchet wheel 29 on the spindle of a pinion which engages the rack 56, and at each oscillation of the lever 23 the ratchet wheel engages a fixed pawl so that it is rotated step-by-step to feed the rack past the pinion ; the rack is oscillated directly by the lever 23 to produce the over-edge stitching required, the amplitude of the oscillation being varied by adjusting the arm 36 and thus shifting the fulcrum pin 39 along the slot in the plate 45. In a modification (Fig. 9, not shown) the pawl and ratchet 29 are replaced by a spring coiled round the pinion spindle and engaging at one end a lug on the plate 10 with adjusting screw for varying the feed.
