Abstract

664,860. Sewing; sewing-machines. BRUTSCH & CO. May 31, 1949 [June 1, 1948], No. 14630/49. Class 112. Sewing-machine frames; darning.-The lower arm 2 of a machine for darning, particularly for tubular work such as stockings, is formed with an enlarged head in which is arranged a shuttle co-operating with the needle; in the form shown this head 2a is spherical, and is provided with a detachable cap 31 for access to the shuttle 30. In an alternative form of frame the standard 3 is inclined, projecting from a base-plate, and the upper and lower arms 1, 2 project upwardly at right-angles to it; in another form the worksupporting arm projects upwardly from a flat base and has an enlarged oval head; the head may be cylindrical with its upper face closed by a flat plate with downwardly bent edges. In the form shown the frame is provided with a clamp 47 for attachment to a table; in a modification the frame carries a bolt with a spherical head adapted to be firmly clamped in a spherical cup on the table so that the machine can be fixed in any desired position. A single cover-plate extending over the top and end face of the upper arm may be provided. Driving.-The upper shaft of the machine in the form shown is driven through bevel gearing 22, 37 by an electric motor 38 pivotally mounted at 39 and biased by a spring 41 to hold the gears in engagement. The wheel 22 is also engaged by a bevel pinion 45 on the shaft of a hand-wheel on the side of the machine. In the form in which both arms of the machine are inclined upwardly, the motor is similarly pivotally mounted in the base of the machine and arranged to drive the lower shaft through ordinary friction gearing. Illuminating-apparatus.-An electric lamp 46 is adjustably mounted on the underneath of the upper arm of the machine. According to the Specification. as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the machine may have a device for picking up loops, comprising a needle 35 reciprocated tangentially to the spherical head 2a in a bracket 18, by a cam lever 17 pivoted to the bracket and engaged by projections on the needle-bar 11. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
