Abstract

294,425. Mundlos, R. Dec. 12, 1927. Zig-zag feed; continuously-reversing feed; button-attaching machines. - The feed-bar is given a lateral movement, in addition to the usual to- and-fro and up-and-down movements, to make a zig-zag stitch by a link connected to a rocking lever 10 operated by a cam 7 rotated by the main shaft 1 by pinions 4, 6. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the feed-bar 19 is slidably mounted on a shaft 16 supported on and parallel to the feed rocking shaft 18 by arms 17. Rigid with the feed-bar is a fork 15 engaging a pin 14 on a slide 12 which is reciprocated to give the feed-dog 20 its lateral movement by the link 11 connected to the rocker 10. The amount of the lateral movement is determined by the position of the link 11 along the slot in the rocker 10. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the slide 12 is suppressed, the rocker 10 being directly connected to the feedbar shaft 16 by a link 35 having a head 35<b> connected to the part 35<a> which can rotate relatively to the part 35 to permit rocking of the arm 17. The arms 17 rigid with the shaft 18, may be replaced by a pair of spring pressed pivoted bearings 36, Fig. 5. For attaching buttons, a clamp 52, 54, Fig. 6, is secured to the feed-dog 20 to hold the button 55 m place. The presser-foot 57 engages under a lip 59 on the part 58 of the clamp, so that raising the presser-foot releases the button. The machine may be used for cut-work embroidery by providing a telescopic link 11, 11<a>, Fig. 2, with a lug 27 engaging a frame 25 on the slider 12 so that when the sewing round the edge of the perforation is completed, the feed-dog 20 and frame 12 can be moved to the extreme outer point by the levers 28, 29 and 30, to allow the thread to be drawn off at the outer edge of the stitching. The bend 26 prevents the frame from being moved too far when the link 11 is near the end of the slot in the lever 10, as shown by the broken line to make a small zig-zag stitch.
