Abstract

1,065,397. Sewing machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. June 26, 1964 [July 18, 19631, No. 26629/64. Heading DIG. A buttonhole sewing machine comprises first means for imparting respective longitudinal and lateral movements to the work-supporting table, whereby to position selected holes of one type of button in the path of travel of the needle, second means for imparting respective longitudinal and lateral movements to the work-supporting table, whereby to position selected holes of another type of button in the path of travel of the needle, and means for adjusting the extent of said movements of the table in accordance with the spacing between the holes of a button to be stitched. As shown, a double-pointed needle N is adapted to be passed between upper and lower needle bars through work held on a table T mounted for movement in longitudinal and lateral directions respectively. A double-armed lever 30, adapted to impart longitudinal movement to table T, has one arm pivoted at 27 to the latter and the other arm adjustably pivoted by a bolt 29 to a bar 36 yieldably coupled to a bar 40 which is pivoted to a follower arm 46. The latter is pivoted on a fixed shaft 48 and carries a follower selectively engageable with either one of cams 60 or 62 fast with a driven shaft 92. Cam 60 is designed for twohole buttons and cam 61 for four-hole buttons. Bolt 29 is adjustable in a slot 16 to set the actual longitudinal throw of table T. Lateral movement is imparted to table T by a bell crank lever 72, one arm of which is connected thereto by a link 73, and the other arm of which is adjustably connected by a bolt 76 to a rod 78 which is pivoted to a follower arm 80. The latter is pivoted on shaft 48 and carries a follower selectively engageable with any one of cams 86, 88, 90 fast with shaft 92. Cam 86 is for two-hole buttons, cam 88 is for four-hole buttons with cross stitching, and cam 90 is for four-hole buttons with parallel stitching. Bolt 76 is adjustable in a slot 66 to set the actual lateral throw of table T. In order to position the locking stitches in the thread post midway between the button and the work, a cam 94 on shaft 92 co-operates with a follower 96 on an arm 98 pivoted on shaft 48. Arm 98 is connected by a link 100 to one arm of a bell crank lever 102. When the locking stitches are being inserted, lever 102 is swung to engage its other end with a stop screw adjustably carried by lever 30.
