As herein shown, the frame 32 is provided with 'a lug 35 secured to a rock shaft 36 mounted to oscillate and move axially in bearings 31 depending from the'arm 22. Oscillation of said shaft' produces a lateral vibration of the frame 32 to cause the needle 26 to pass successively,

The lever @t carries intermediate its ends a cam follower t6 adapted to engage a groove Gl in a cam 68 rotated `from the cam it as herefter 'more particularly described. The cam groove .6l comprises two radially odset portions of equal length so that the work will be shifted-from one pair of holes to the other in one' direction or the other at each 180 movement or the cam G8. The lever t3 is fulcrumed on a stud Gi adjustable longitudinally or the lever to vary vthe axial movement imparted to the roch shaft @d in accordance with the spacing of the pairs of holes in the button. The cam follower to comprises apin slidably mounted in the lever .St and connected by a lever l0 with a second similar pin it adapted to engage an opening in sulug it -projecting inwardly from the frame and provided externally of the latter with an operating handle i2. By operating `the handle l2 the cam follower $6 can be withdrawn from the cam groove 6l and the lever 63 locked to the frame to prevent any longitudinal shifting of the work in sewing a twohole button.
The stop mechanism for operatively connectging the pulley 24 'with the shaft 23 and disconnecting the same therefrom specifically forms no part of the present invention and may be of any suitable well known type. As shown in Figs. 1 and 7, this mechanism comprises an annular lines in Fig. l, the latch 18 is free to engage the notch 'Il and the shaft 23 is connected with-the pulley 24 for rotation thereby. For convenience in moving the stop arm into this position to start the machine the rock shaft 83 is provided with an arm 84 connected by a link 85 with a suitable treadle, not shown. When the stop arm ci is in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l the head 82 is located in the path of movement of the latch i8 as the shaft rotates in the direcl tion of the arrow in Fig. 7. Engagement of the latch with the head 82 causes said latch to be disengaged from the notch ll, thereby disconnecting tha pulley 24 from the shaft 23 and positively stopping the latter, the stopping impact being cushioned by yielding of thebhead 32, and the recoil being checked to bring the shaft to rest in a predetermined angular position by the engagement of a spring' controlled dog Q0 carried by the head 82 with a lug dll on the collar i9. The stop arm is yieldingly held in either of the above positions by a spring pressed positioning plunger 88 (Figs. 1 and 3) carried by the arm 84 and engageable with recesses El@ in the frame.
Referring to Fig. 5, the cam is keyed or otherwise secured to an upright shaft 95 journalled at its lower end in a. bearing et in the lower walt of the arm 22 and atits upper end in a sleeve Sli clamped in a split hub 9a carried hfy an arm 9s formed on a ring itil secured to the top of the Y arm 22 about an opening in the latter which is normally closed by a removable cap Mii. The shaft 95 is formed with a key-way E02 to receive a sliding key los movable into upper and.r lower positions in either of which it is removably held by a spring-pressed locking pin ille adapted te engage apertures lilo therein. When in its upper position, shown in Fig. 5, the key tilt engages a key-way 06, formed inthe interior of the cam 48, so that the shaft 95 and cam 68 carried thereby are rotated directly by and in unison with the cam' dil. When the key G03 is in its lower position, it engages a key-way itil in a gear H08 rotatably mounted on the shaft 95 in a recess m9 in the cam d8. The gear lil@ is formed with internal teeth M0 meshing with a pinion lli journalled in the cam 40 and connected for rotation in unison with a coaxial pinion M2 likewise journalled in said cam and meshing with a xed pinion H3, secured to or formed integral with the sleeve 9i. The gear B08 and pinions lil, H2 and H3 `constitute 3 to 2 gearing connecting the cams 4B and GG, so that when the parts are so connected. the shaft 95 and cam 68 will make one complete rotation for each movement of 240 of the cam flo.
Referring to Figs. 3, 5, 8, 9 and l0, mounted in a recess in the top of the cam' 48 for angular adjustment about the axis of said cam and the shaft 95, is adisk 20, said disk, in combination with the camr d8, constituting a rotary controller for the stop mechanism above described. The cam 48 is formed about its upper edge with a circumferential series of spaced notches G29, while the-disk |20 is yformed about its edge with Y a series of similar notches |22. The notches |26 flange .16 formed on the pulley, said fiange havf ing a notch I1-to receive a latch or dog I8 pivoted to a collar I9 on .the shaft 23, said latch being normally urged in\the direction to` engage said notch by a, spring-pressed plunger 80. operating with the latch 'I8 is a stop arm '8| having a resiliently yielding head 82 and secured Vtoa rock shaft 83 journalled in the frame. The arm |21 is connected at its free end, by a link |'(see also Fig. 1), with the upper end of a lever |3|1 pivoted intermediate its ends,
at |32, to the frame. The lower end of the lever 30 |3i is connected by a link |33 with the stop arm di. The dog |25 is formed with an inclined end |34 adapted, when said dogcis movedtoward the left, asshown in Fig. 3, to engage a fixed pin |35, thereby causing the nose |26 to be with- 3 in Fig. 4.
In operation, when the nose |26 of the dog |25 enters a pair of registering notches in the controller, continued rotation `of the latter causes said dog to be drawn toward the left in Fig. 3,
carrying with it the arm |21 which, through the link |30, lever |3l and link |33, causes the stop arm 3| to be moved into the position shownin dotted lines in Fig. 1 to stop the machine. When 45 said stop arm is so` moved, and just prior to the stopping of the machine, engagement of the end i3d of the dog with th pin |35 causes the nose |26 to be withdrawn from the registering notches in order to permit the. subsequent movement of 5U the arm 8| into the full-line position by the treadle connections to re-start the machine.
In addition tothe openings A, B, C, and D, the. disk |20 is formed with a vshort radial slot |4| which, when said disk is adjusted into the angular position shown in Figs. 11 and 12, registers with an eccentric socket |42 (Figs. 5, 11 and 12) in the top of the pinion ||2, so that, as said pinionV rotates, the disk |20 will be angularly oscillated to carry the notches |2|, |22 at the 60 120 points alternately into and out of register, as illustrated at d in Fig. 11 and at d' in Fig. 12, respectively. The arrangement is such that each pair of notches at the 120 points is moved into and out ofoperation at alternate rotations of l the controller. Consequently, a given pair d, d'
of such notches will be inoperative to cause stoppage of the machine at one rotation of the coni troller but will be rendered operative at the next subsequent rotation of the controller. In other 70 words, the parts being adJusted as shown in Figs.

With the cam A follower 44 still similarly engaged, and the pin inserted Vthrough the hole C, the machine stops at the end of a complete rotation of the cam and o sews two twelve-stitch groups, each completed by a tying stitch, and if the pin 1|, Figs. 2 and 6,
is withdrawn to unlock the lever 63, and the calnl follower 66 engaged with the cam groove 61, these two groups will be sewn through the two pairs of holes in a fourFhole. button. With the pin |23 inserted through the opening D, as shown in Fig. 10, and the cam follower 44 engaged with l the cam groove 41, the machine will stop at every movementCof the cam 48 and sew an eightfstitch group with a tying stitch at the end. With the cam follower 44 still engaged with the cam groove 41, and the pin |23 inserted in the socket |42 through the slot |4|, the machine will stopqat every 240 movement of the cam [i8 and sew two eight-stitch groups with a tying stitch at the end of each group, and if the cam follower 66 is engaged with the cam groove 61 in the cam 68 and the key |03 shifted into its lower position 'in which the same directly con-y 5 nects the gear I 08 with the upright shaft 95,
these two groups will be placed in the of holes of a four-hole button.
It will thus-be seen that the machine shown and described 4can beset to s ew, automatically, groups of 8, 12, 16 or 24 stitches, each group being completed by a tying stitch irrespective of the number of stitches therein; and to stop at the completion of any of these groups, this being twoh pairs accomplished by the use (in conjunction withl the stop mechanism described) of a -single main cam 48 having two alternatively operative cam grooves and driven in constant time relation'withthe stitching mechanism. The machine can also be set to sew -two 8A or 12 stitchgroups and stop at the completion of the second group and, by the use of one additional cam 68 having a single cam groove, to place these -two groups in the two pairs of holes of la four hole button.

I claim: 1. In a sewing machine having stitch-forming mechanism and stop mechanism therefor comprising a controller, means for moving said con- .troller at a predetermined speed relative to the relative positions of said parts, to cause operation of said stop mechanism after the formation of a variable number of stitches.
2. In a sewing machine having stitch-forming mechanism and stop mechanism therefor, mechanism for controlling said stop mechanism comprising a controller, means for moving Said 'coni troller at a predetermined speed relative to the speed of operation of said stitch-forming mechanism\ said controller including a plurality of relatively adjustable parts having diierently spaced series of stop elements adapted upon the relative adjustment of said parts to be positioned in different combinations, and a member controlled at al1 times jointly by said parts, and
operable, in accordance with the relative posi-y tions of said stop elements, to cause operation of said stop mechanism after the formation of a variable number of stitches.
3. In a sewing machine having stitch-forming mechanism and stop mechanism therefor, mechanism for controlling said stop mechanism comprising a controller having a plurality of parts formed with diierently spaced series of stop elements, said parts being relatively adjustable into dispositions in which different stop elements of said parts complement each other, means for moving said parts together in timed relation with said stitch-forming mechanism, and a member operable upon engagement with only complemented elements to cause operation of said stop mechanism.'
d. In a sewing machinehaving stitch-forming mechanism and stop mechanism therefor, mechanism for controlling said stop mechanism comprising a controller including a plurality of parts having differently spaced series of stop elements, said parts being relatively adjustable to position the stop elements oi the respective parts in different combinations, means for moving said controller in'timed relation with said stitch-forming mechanism, and a member operable upon engagement with stop elements of the respective parts which are relativelypositioned in a certain predetermined way to cause operation of said stop mechanism.
5. In a sewing machine having stitch-forming mechanism and stop mechanism therefor, mechanism for controlling said stop mechanism comprising a controller having a plurality of parts formed with diiferently spaced series of stop elements, said parts being relatively adjustable to bring stop elements of the respective parts into register at variable points, means for moving said parts in timed relationA with said stitchforming mechanism and a member operable upon engagement with registering stop elements or the respective parts to cause operation of said stop mechanism.
6. In a sewing machine having stitch-forming mechanism including a stitching shaft and a stop mechanism for stopping said machine after the formation of a predetermined number of speed relative to that of said stitching shaft, said controller including a plurality of coaxial' disks having differently spaced notches in their edges and angularly adjustable to position the notches of the respective disks in dilerent combinations, and a member operable upon engagement with notches of the respective disks which are relatively positioned in a certain predetermined Way to cause operation of said stop mechanism.
, 8. In a sewing machine having stitch-forming mechanism including a stitching shaft and a stop mechanism for stopping said machine after the formation .of a predetermined number of stitches, mechanism for controlling said stop mechanism comprising a rotaryl controller, means for rotating said controller at a predetermined speed relative to that of said stitching shaft, said controller including a plurality of coaxial disks having differently spaced notches in their edges and angularly adjustable to bring notches of the respective disks into register at variable angularly spaced points, and a member operable upon engagement with registering notches of the respective disks to cause operation of said stop mechanism:

In a sewing machine having stitch-forming mechanism and stop mechanism therefor, mechanism for controlling said stop mechanism comprising a controller, means for moving said controller at a predetermined speed relative to the speed of operation of said stitch-forming mechanism, said controller including a plurality of parte adjustable into diirerent relative positions, a member jointly controlled by said parts in accordance with their relative positions to cause operation of said stop mechanism, and means for automatically changing the relative adjustment of said parts at predetermined times to prevent operation of said stop mechanism by said member. g
10. 18. In a machine for sewing on buttons, stitchforming mechanism, work holding means, means including a cam, rotated in constant time relation` with respect to the stitch-forming mechanism, for relatively moving the stitch-forming mechanism and work holding means to form a group of stitches through two holes of a button, said cam having a plurality of alternatively operative cam `grooves including portions dierently positioned angularly or the cam and shaped respectively to cause a tying stitch to be formed after a different number oi' stitches have been formed in the group, and a stop mechanism having controlling means adjustable while the machine is at rest to cause the latter to stop after each tying stitch has been formed or after each alternate tying stitch has been formed. v
19. In a machine for sewing on buttons, stitching mechanism, work clamping mechanism,
means including a cam for relatively moving the stitching mechanism and work clamping mechanism to sew a group of stitches in two holes of a button, said cam haying a plurality of alternatively operative cam grooves including portions dineren'tly positioned angularly of the cam and Y to relatively reciprocate said holding means and i mechanism at uniformly recurring intervals for a-variable time period so as to vcause said mechanism to i'orm a variable number of stitches tion of said stitches, and means operated in variable time relation with said device `for relatively shifting said holding means and mechanism to tying Stitch to f divide said stitches in substantially equal numbers over the several pairs of holes.

In a machine for sewing on buttons, stitchforming mechanism, work holding means, a. device adjustable to relatively reciprocate said holding means and mechanism at uniformly recurring inrvalsthrough an operating cycle of variable duration so as to cause said mechanism to form a variable'number of stitches through a pair of holes of a button, means operated in timed relation with said device and adjustable to stop the machine after one or several of said operating cycles of the device, other means operated in varimeans and stitch-forming mechanism to cause the latter to form automatically groups of button-attaching stitches each completed by a tying stitch, said moving means having provision for varying the number of stitches formed in each of such groups while .causing eachgroup to be completed ,by a tying stitch irrespective of the number of stitches therein, and means for automatically stopping the machine adjustable to op- A'crate at'the completion of one or more of any of said stitch groups.

In a machine for sewing on buttons, button holding means, stitch-forming mechanism, means including a controlling member operating in conetant time relation with said stitch-forming mechanism for relatively moving said holding means and stitch-forming mechanism to cause the latter to form automatically groups of button-attaching stitches each completed by a tying stitch, said moving means having provision. for
varying the number of stitches formed in each of such groups lwhile causing each group to be completed by a tying stitch irrespective of the number of stitches therein, and means, also operating in constant time relation with said stitch-form'- ing mechanism, for automatically stopping the holding means and stitch-forming mechanism in one direction to cause the latter to form groups of stitches through said pairs of holes, said moving means having provision for varying the number of stitches formed in each group while causing each group to be automatically completed by a tying stitch irrespective of the number of stitches therein, means for automatically stopping the machine adjustable to operate at the completion of any two of said stitch groups, and means for relatively shifting said holding means and stitchforming mechanism in another direction after the completion of one of said groups to cause the two groups of stitches to be formed through different pairs of holes.

In a machine for sewing on buttons having a plurality of pairs of holes, button holding means, stitch-forming mechanism, means for relatively moving said holding means and stitch-forming mechanism in one direction to cause the latter to form groups of stitches through said pairs of holes, said moving means having provision for varying the number of stitches-formed in each of such groups while causing each group to be automatically completed by a tying stitch irrespective of the number of stitches therein, means for automatically stopping the machine adjustable to operate at the completion of any two of Said stitch groups, and means for relatively shifting said holding means and stitch-forming mechanism in another direction after the completion of one of said groups to cause the two groups of stitches to be formed through different pairs of holes, said shifting means being adjustable in accordance with the numbers of stitches in said groups. I

In a machine for sewing on buttons hav'- ing a plurality of pairs of holes, button holding means, stitch-forming mechanism, means oper- 40 ating in constant time relation with said stitchforming mechanism for relatively moving said machine adjustable to operate at the completion of one or morev of any of said stitch groups.

In a machine for sewing on buttons, buti ton holding means, stitch-forming mechanism, means for relatively moving said holding means and stitch-forming mechanism to form stitches ksuitably positioned tc"`attach a button, said moving means including a cam and means for moving the same in constant time relation with the operation of said'stitch-forming mechanism, said cam having alternatively operative portions adapted respectively to cause the automaticformation of groups of stitches of 'a different number each and each completed by la tying stitch' irrespective of the number of stitches therein, and
means for automaticallyv stopping the machineA adjustable to operate at the completion'of any of said stitch groups.
25. In a machine for sewing on buttons, having a plurality of pairs of holes, button holding means, stitch-forming mechanism, means oper- 'ating' in constant time relation with said stitchforming mechanism for relatively moving said holding means and stitch-forming mechanism in one direction to cause the latter to form groups of stitches through said pairs of holes, said moving means having provision 'for varying the number of stitches formed in each of such groups while causing each group to be automatically completed by a tying stitch irrespective of the number of stitches therein, meansvfor automatically stopping the machine adjustable to operate at the completion of any two of said stitch groups, and means for relatively shifting said holding means and stitch-forming mechanism in another direction after the completion of one of said groups to cause the two groups of stitches to be formed throughdlfferent pairs of holes, said shifting means being adjustable in accordance with the numbers of4 stitches in said groups.

In a machine for sewing on buttons having a, plurality of pairs of holes, button holding means, stitch-forming mechanism, means operating in constant time relation with said stitchforming mechanism for relatively moving said 'holding means and stitch-forming mechanism in pletion oi any two of said stitch groups, and means for relatively shifting sald,holding means and stitch-forming mechanism in another direction after the -completion of one of said groups to cause the two groups of stitches to be formed through different pairs of holes, said shifting means operating in variable time relation with said moving means and stopping means.

In a machine for sewing on buttons having a plurality of pairs of holes, button holding means, stitch-forming -mechanism, means operating in constant time relation with said stitch-forming mechanism for relatively moving said holding means and stitch-forming mechanism in one direction to cause the latter to form groups of stitches through said pairs of holes, said moving means including a cam having al-` ternatively operative portions adapted respectively to cause the automatic formation of stitch groups of a different number of stitches each and each completed by a tying stitch irrespective of the number of stitches therein, means for automatically stopping the machine adjustable to operate at the completion of any two of said stitch groups, means including a second cam for relatively shifting said holding means and stitchforming mechanism in another direction after the completion of one of said groups to cause the two groups of stitches to be formed through diierent pairs of holesand means, for driving said second cam at a variable speed relative to said first, named cam.

Ina sewing machine having stitch-forming mechanism including a stitching shaft and a stop mechanism for stopping the machine after the formation of a predetermined'number of stitches, mechanism for controlling said stop mechanism comprising a rotary controller, means for rotating said controller at a predetermined speed relative to that of the stitching shaft, a member operable under the control of said controller to cause operation of said stop mechanism at each of a plurality of points in each rotation of said controller, and means for preventing said member .from causing operation of said stop mechanism at each of said points on alternate rotations of said controller.

In a sewing machine having stitch-forming mechanism including a stitching shaft and a stop mechanism for stopping the machine after the iormation of a predetermined number of stitches, mechanism for controlling said stop mechanism' comprising a rotary contrller, means for rotating said tive to that of the stitching shaft, a member operable under the control of said controller to cause operation of said stop mechanism at each of a plurality of points in each rotationorsaid controller, and means associated with and carried by said controller for preventing said member from causing operation of said stop mechanism at each of said points on alternate rotations of seid controller.

In o oewing machine having stitch-forming controller at a predetermined speed rela-y cause operation of said mechanism including a stitching shaft and a stop mechanism for stopping the machine after the formation of a predetermined number oi stitches, mechanism for controlling said stop mechanism comprising a rotary controller, means for rotating said controller at a predetermined speed relative to that of the stitching-shaft, a member operable under the control of said controller to stop mechanism at each of a plurality of points in each rotation of said controller, and means for preventing said member from causing operation or said stop mechanism at alternate points on one rotation oi' the controller and at the remaining points on the succeeding rotation thereof.

In a sewing machine having stitch-forming v mechanism and stop mechanism for stopping the spect to the stitch-forming mechanism, said having a plurality of alternatively operative cam y machine after the formation of groups oi stitches, mechanism for controlling said stop mechanism comprising a rotary controller having means for causing operation of said stop mechanism at certain points in the rotation of. said controller, means for rotating said controller in timed relation with respect to said stitch-forming mechanism, said controller having an element rotatable therewith but oscillatable with respect thereto into positions adapted respectively to render the controller operative and inoperative to cause operation of said stop mechanism at said points, and means for oscillating said element in timed relation with respect to the rotation ot said controller. In a machine for sewing stitches in groups of a variable number each, stitch-forming mechanism, stop mechanism for stopping the machine, means, including a cam, for controlling the kind of stitches formed, means `for rotating said cam in timed relation with respect to said stitchforming mechanism, said cam having a plurality oi' alternatively operative cam grooves including portions differently positioned .angularly of the c am and shaped respectively to cause a tying stitch to be formed after a dinerent number of stitches have -been formed in the group, and means carried by the cam for causing operation of said stop mechanism and adiustable to cause such operation after the formation of one or t more tying stitches.

In a machine for sewing stitches in groups of a variable numbergeach and in diii'erent pooitions respectively, stitch-forming mechanism work-holding means, means, including a cam, for controlling the kind oi stitches formed, means for driving said cam in timed relation with recam grooves shaped respectively to cause a tying stitch to be formed after a different number or stitches have been formed in a group, means, including a second cam, for relatively shifting said stitchforming mechanism and work holding means, and means for driving said second cam from said mst-named cam at a selective variable speed.
