Abstract

844,729. Travelling wave tubes. TELEFUNKEN G.m.b.H. Sept. 29, 1958 [Oct. 8, 1957], No. 31022/58. Class 39(1). The helix 1 of a travelling wave tube is secured to insulating support rods 2 by a coating of stoved glaze, the glaze covering the entire surface of the rods and helix. As shown three ceramic rods 2 with strips or layers 4 of carbon or other lossy material and carrying the helix 1 is sprayed or dipped in glazing liquid and placed in a dryer, after which the glaze coating is stoved to form glaze bonds 3. While the tube envelope is being pumped out the layer of glaze covers the helix and lossy material 4 and prevents it from releasing occluded gases. When the stoved coating of glaze is only partly dried it may be coated with one or more additional layers of glaze. Different areas may be given different numbers of coatings of glaze. Glazing liquids of different viscosities may be used to control the thickness of the glaze layer either locally or over the whole assembly. A variation in thickness over the length of the glaze may match the electron beam velocity and wave velocity, e.g. by increasing the thickness of the glaze towards the collector end of the tube. In a modification the helix and support rods are assembled and temporarily stuck together by coating them at the areas of contact with partially dried crude glazing liquor ; the assembly is then further coated with an overall layer of glaze and stoved.
