A tandem-wing aircraft has a forward wing 1 of less area e.g. from “ to 1/3 the area of a main wing 2, the front wing being mounted for pitching adjustment about a transverse axis. located close to the horizontal plane passing through the centre of gravity of the aircraft. The front wing has flaps 4 and provision for boundary layer control and the rear wing has flaps 5 and ailerons 6 and mountings for underslung jet propulsion engines 7. Either or both wings may be rectangular in plan or tapered, swept back or of delta platform whilst the front wing may be swept forward.
