Abstract

890,703. Vertical take-off aircraft. MESSERSCHMITT A.G. Oct. 28, 1960 [Oct. 30, 1959], No. 37084/60. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] A tiltable pod for jet power units in vertical take-off aircraft containing several, preferably two, engines has the shape of the external fairing of the pod designed to take the volume of air required at cruising speed by one of the engines and an inner duct leading from the edge of the fairing to this engine controllable supplementary air openings leading to the duct for starting and landing, and an intake for the second or further engines having one, or several flaps, which when closed restores the external smooth shape of the pod whilst preventing a significant flow of air through the second or further engines. A tiltable engine pod contains two or more jet propulsion units A, B. An intake duct E supplies the necessary air for engine A at cruising speed. For starting and landing additional air intakes F are provided for this engine. The intake of the second engine B is closed at aircraft cruising speed by one or more flaps G which, when closed, align with the external smooth surface of the pod without permitting a significant value of air to flow through the engine B.
