Apparatus for reversing the thrust of a jet propulsion plant on aircraft comprises an annular sealed cavity 1 surrounding and in direct contact with the jet pipe 2 and connected by pipes 7, 10, 11, 18 and 19 to a pair of fluid pressure motors 12 and 13 each operatively connected to one eyelid element of a thrust reversing spoiler 16, an exhaust conduit 9 and a valve 8 for control of motors 12, 13 being provided. A cylinder 37, connected to cavity 1 through a pipe 40 and no-return valve 41, is filled with water which is forced in selected quantities into cavity 1 by a piston 38 mounted on a rotatable piston rod 36 screwed into a mounting block 39 and having a splined connection 34 with a shaft 32 driven through gearing 30 by an electric motor 23. The motor is operated for a time interval determined by a time delay relay in a control 22 upon closing of a switch 24 whereby a small amount of water is forced into cavity 1 where it flashes into steam. This is selectively admitted to motors 12, 13 through valve 8 which is actuated by a solenoid operated control 42 energised by a switch 47. The cavity 1 may be internally ribbed on its face in contact with the jet pipe to facilitate heat-transfer and pipe 40 may be extended into the cavity 1 and formed with spray orifices. The flow of water may be dependent on the pressure in the steam generator.
