Abstract

The invention comprises metal complex dyes containing one metal atom to one to two dye molecules of the formula: <FORM:0844285/IV (c)/1> where R1 is H or alkyl, R2 is alkyl, R3 and R4 are H, alkyl, hydroxylakyl or phenyl or combined to form a heterocyclic ring and A is a phenolic or enolic compound, free from sulphonic acid groups and coupling #sto the OH group, of the benzene, naphthalene, quinoline, thionaphthene, pyrazolone or acetoacetic acid phenylide series or containing one metal atom combined with one dye molecule of the above formula and one mol of another complex-forming dye or of a colourless complex-forming compound. They are made by conventional methods by metallising the dyes obtained by coupling appropriate diazotised aniline derivatives with the requisite components. Indicated coupling components are 1-hydroxybenzenes containing aliphatic or halogen groups in the 4-position, phenols disubstituted in the 2- and 4-positions, 1-naphthols substituted in the 4- or 5-positions, 2-naphthol and its alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, acyl, acylamino, carbalkoxy and sulphonamido derivatives, 2, 4-dihydroxyquinoline, 1, 3-dihydroxyisoquinoline, 1-phenyl-3-methyl -5- pyrazolone and acetracetylaminobenzene and its phenyl substituted derivatives and other pyrazolones. Chromium and cobalt are preferred metals. The dyes dye wool, silk, casein wool, leather and poly-amide and -urethane fibres. They may also be used in colouring plastic masses or organic solutions e.g. cellulose ester varnishes, varnishes, articles of cellulose esters and ethers, and in spin-dyeing fibres such as artificial silk. In examples which illustrate the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing wools in red or blue shades, R1 and R2 are ethyl and methyl, R3 is H and methyl, R4 is methyl, isopropyl and 2-hydroxyethyl and R3 and R4 together form a pyrrolidide or morpholine derivative. The dye 1-amino-2-methoxy-5-methyl -4- sulphoanmide --> 1, 3-diphenylpyrazolone-5 is used as a dye not of the above formula and 2-hydroxybenzoic acid -5- sulphonic acid phenylamide as a colourless complex former.
