Abstract
844,212. Sockets. JONES, W. C. March 21, 1958 [March 23, 1957], No. 9600/57. Class 83 (3). In means for attaching a rotarycutter such as a milling-cutter 10 to a tapered shank 1, Fig. 1, a cylindrical plug 3 protrudes from a socket 2 in the shank and has an obtuse conical portion 7 to centre the cutter 10. The cutter screws at 12 on to the shank, and clearance is provided at 12<SP>1</SP> so that axial thrust is transmitted directly through the plug to the shank 1. In a modification, the threads 12 of the cutter are formed on a separate sleeve, Fig. 2 (not shown). In a further modification, the plug 3, Fig. 4, is hollow and transmits axial thrust to the shank 1 through pins 21, 22 meeting on an inclined surface 23 and secured by a screwed plug 25. Unscrewing the plug 25 enables the cutter to be readily removed. Pin 21 is retained by a circlip 29. In another modification, the hollow plug 3, Fig. 5, is in two parts meeting on an inclined surface 33, and transmits the axial thrust through a screwed socket 35, unscrewing of which assists release of the cutter. In each form the plug 3 may be tapered at the upper end to engage a tapered socket 2 in the shank. Clearance 5 may be provided in the plug, locking-screw &c. to allow for a centre 6 mounted in the socket. Specification 844,213 is referred to.
