Abstract

844,184. Stuffing-box substitutes. VICTOR MANUFACTURING & GASKET CO. Dec. 13, 1957, No. 38887/57. Class 122 (5). A sealing ring for use between a shaft and a split housing comprises a metallic ring 17, Fig. 2, having a bead 19 and flanges 21 covered by an elastomer 10, 11 to form a locating groove 12, the elastomer extending thinly over the bead and inwardly of the ring to form a sealing lip 23. The ring 17 is split into two halves and its adjacent ends are chamfered at 26, Fig. 1, before the elastomer is moulded thereto to form a continuous ring. After moulding the ring is split at 27 to facilitate assembly on to the shaft; the completed ring may also be split into two halves by splitting along line 32. The sealing lip 23 may be reinforced by a wire 24 and covered by a wear-resistant fabric 25. In a modification, two sealing lips may be provided.
