Abstract

843,159. Hydraulic apparatus. FOXBORO CO. Nov. 13, 1958 [Dec. 6, 1957], No. 36614/58. Class 69 (2). Apparatus for positioning a movable device, such as a valve or piston, comprises means 14, 16 for producing relative movement in accordance with an operating signal between a first member 44 having a peripheral arcuate jet slot 43 and a second member 25 having an arcuate jet-receiving slot so as to move the jet slot and the jet-receiving slot into and out of operative alignment to permit hydraulic fluid ejected from the slot to control the displacement of a member 24 connected to the device. The member 44 is supported by resilient arms 58, 59 from a plate 56 and is axially movable by a lever 16 having one end connected by a flexible joint 64 to the member 44 and the other end operatively connected to a bellows 14 movable in response to a signal, the lever having its centre mounted on a flexible disc 63 to permit it to pivot thereabout. The opposite end of the member 44 is formed with a bore 45 connected by a flexible pipe 66 to a bore 67 in the plate 56 leading to a pump 17 connected by a pipe 18 to a tank 10 containing liquid in which the members are suspended. The member 44 has holes 46 connecting the bore 45 with annular chambers 53, 54 formed in members 47, 48 mounted on the member 44, the spacing between the members, as determined by a washer 49, forming the jet slot 43. Liquid ejected from the slot passes through the jet receiving slot in the second member 25 which is carried by the plate 56 and is provided with chambers 26, 27 divided by a thin wall 28. The chambers are formed by discs 32, 33 which have inwardly directed tongues and are connected by pipes 20, 21 to the opposite ends of a cylinder 22 having a piston 23 connected by a rod 24 to the device to be positioned. On receipt of an operating signal, the lever 16 is moved to displace the member 44 relative to the member 25 and, from a position wherein equal amounts of fluid pass to the chambers 26, 27, more fluid passes into one chamber than the other and to one end of the cylinder to move the piston 23, liquid from the other end of the cylinder passing through a gap 62 between the members.
