A supporting apparatus for pipes P or the like comprises a spring support device S and an hydraulic unit H, the spring supporting device including a housing 10 in which is pivotally mounted a lever 15. The hydraulic unit H comprises an hydraulic cylinder 25 in which works a piston 28 and piston-rod 30 assembly, the piston-rod extending through one end of the cylinder 25 and being pivotally attached to the lever 15. A conduit 32 communicates between opposite end portions of the cylinder and a fluid control valve 40 is connected in the conduit, a means responsive to variations in the conditions of the pipe being provided to operate the valve. A load-carrying means 17 joins the lever to the pipe. In the construction shown, the loadcarrying means 17 s adjustable n length by means of screws 20, 21 and is connected to the lever 15 and pipe P by universal joints 24, 23. Alternatively, simple pivots may be used as connections. Hydraulic fluid passes into the circuit from a reservoir 37 through a one-way valve 38. The piston 28 is provided with a bleeder passage (not shown) and means for compensating for the length of the piston-rod immersed in the cylinder. The valve 40 is actuated by a solenoid unit 41 and is normally open in the working of the supporting apparatus. A switch actuated by pressure in the pipe (Fig. 2, not shown), temperature of the material in the pipe (Fig. 3, not shown), or movement of the pipe (Fig. 4, not shown) effects the closure of the valve 40 to increase the damping characteristic of the hydraulic unit. In a modification, the pipe is supported below the supporting apparatus (Fig. 5, not shown). Specifications 830,558 and 841,332 are referred to.
