Abstract

734,621. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. MACTAGGART, SCOTT & CO., Ltd., and RUSSELL R., C. Feb. 9, 1954 [Feb. 9, 1953], No. 3559/53. Class 135. A ship's stearing gear &c. is remotely controlled by liquid - pressure operated means comprising a transmitter having a pair of manually-adjustable valves 11 for regulating the pressure in pipes 21, 22 connected to a receiver having liquid-pressure - operated distribution valves 32 for controlling the flow of pressure liquid to a servomotor 39, the piston 46 of which is connected by a link 47 and a floating lever 48 to a pump or valve 49 controlling the supply of pressure liquid to the stearing-gear 50. The valves 11 are operated through a pivoted lever 24, the ends of which bear upon the valves and the tilting of which is controlled by a spring-loaded roller 26 carried by a member 25 traversed by a screw 28 operated by a hand wheel. The distribution valves 32 are connected to a pivoted lever 42, the displacement of which from the horizontal position is dependent upon the pressures in the pipes 21, 22, and which is returned to this position after operation of the rudder by a roller 44 carried by a member 43 secured to the servo piston-rod.' In operation, the movement of the roller 26, e.g. to the right, depresses'the right valve 11, thus permitting pressure liquid supplied through the pipe 16 to flow via the annular space 30 and the bore 31 of the valve to the underside of the valve and thence to the space .below the left distribution valve 32 of the receiver. The latter valve moves upwards thus tilting the lever 42 and permitting pressure liquid from the pipe 16 to flow through the duct 37 and the pipe 38 to the right end of the servomotor, the piston of which moves to the left and effects operation of the rudder and displaces liquid from the left end of the servomotor through the pipe 40 and past the right valve 32, which moved downwards during the upward movement of the other valve 32, into the chamber 42a and thence via pipes 42b, 19a to exhaust. Movement of the servo-piston to the left effects corresponding movement of the roller 44 which restores the lever 42 to its horizontal position. The downward movement of the right valve 32 forces liquid through the pipe 21 so maintaining the left valve 11 of the transmitter in contact with the lever 24 and allowing the discharge to flow through the bore 31, the annulus 13 and the duct 18 into the chamber 19 and thence through the pipe 19a to exhaust. Fig. 2 shows a modified transmitter comprising a casing 51 having valves 53 operated through a ring 56 adapted to be rocked on a pivot 54 through a roller 58 carried by a member 57 supported by trunnions one of which mounts the operating hand wheel.
