Abstract

670,283. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. March 20, 1950 [April 1, 1949], No. 8936/49. Class 135. A fluid-operated follow-up servo-mechanism of the kind in which a piston valve 2 is movable axially to control ports in a sleeve 5 to supply fluid to and exhaust it from the opposite sides of a slave piston 4, said sleeve being movable with the slave piston so that the ports therein are closed by the valve as soon as the latter stops and the piston has moved in synchronism with the valve, is characterized in that the valve is rotated by a fluid jet or jets operating on vanes carried by the valve to prevent sticking of the latter to the sleeve. In an embodiment, the controlling impulse, e.g. from an automatic pilot, is applied through balls 21 to the spindle of valve 2. The valve is rotated by a turbine 26 revolving in a stationary frame 27, which is provided with passages 32 constituting jets tangential to the vanes on the turbine and supplied with pressure oil from a conduit 34. Pressure oil is also supplied continuously from a conduit 45 to the left-hand side of the servo-piston 4 and movement of the piston is effected when valve 2 is moved either to connect the right-hand side of the piston to exhaust or to connect it to the supply line 45, the movement of the piston in this latter instance being due to the differential effective areas of the two sides of the piston. The controlled object is connected to the servo-piston spindle 17. Follow-up movement is provided by transmitting the movement of piston 4 through a lever 9 to the sleeve 5. The sleeve is loaded to the left by a spring 16. The oil under pressure may be supplied by a rotary piston type pump with a spring-loaded reaction ring, but pneumatic instead of hydraulic actuation may be employed.
