Abstract

563,212. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd., and DOVE, E. B. Nov. 24, 1942, No. 16662. [Class 135] A hydraulic control mechanism for variable pitch airscrews controlled by an enginedriven governor to maintain the engine speed constant includes a manually-actuated valve adapted in one position to connect the governor unit to the pitch servo-control piston and the throttle power piston to exhaust, in a second position to connect both power pistons to exhaust and in a third position to connect the governor unit to the throttle power piston and the motive fluid supply directly to the pitch power piston. The pitch servo-piston is provided with a follow-up sleeve and controls the piston of the blades either by means of a hydraulic jack or by means of clutches through which pitch changing gearing is operatively connected to a powerdriven shaft which is constantly rotating or otherwise. The valve member 20 has two flats 24, 26 and a through passage 28 leading from the flat 24 to one of the lands of the piston. In the position shown, a pipe 18 leading to the governor unit is connected to a pipe leading to the servo-control piston while a pipe 14 leading to the throttle jack is coupled to the exhaust pipe 32. By moving the valve member downwards, pipes 16 and 18 are closed and the pipe 12 leading to the servo-control piston and the pipe 14 are connected to the exhaust pipe. This allows a spring associated with the servocontrol piston to move it towards the feathering position. If the valve is moved upwards, pipes 14, 18 are connected to put the throttle jack under the control of the governor unit and to connect the pipe 12 to a pipe 16 supplying motive fluid so supplying pressure fluid to the servo-control piston in the direction to cause the pitch of the blades to become progressively finer and finally assume a negative pitch. According to the Provisional Specification, the valve may be used for other purposes. Specification 581,326 is referred to.
