565,579. Controlling variable-pitch propellers. BISHOP, J. L. H., and HOLBERTON, B. V. March 10, 1943, No. 3874. [Class 135] A hydraulically-operated variable-pitch propeller installation comprises the combination with a hydraulic pump and a double-acting cam operative to adjust the blades in either direction and controlled by a governor-actuated valve of a relief according to the pressure existing in a part of the hydraulic system which is open to the coarse-pitch end of the hydraulic cylinder. As shown in the Fig., the blades 10 are adjusted by a cylinder 15 movable over a stationary piston 16 under the control of a valve 29 actuated by a governor 33 adjustably loaded by a spring 34. Motive fluid is supplied by an engine-driven pump 22 and a pump 25 driven from a source other than the engine. The pump 22 is provided with a by-passing relief valve 40 comprising a valve member 39 carried by a tubular stem 42 slidably mounted in the casing and provided with a flange 44. The flange engages the wall of the casing to provide an annular loading chamber 45 connected by a pipe 46 leading to a pipe 38 connecting the control valve with the coarse pitch side of the cylinder 15. A loading spring 47 is also arranged in the annular chamber.
