Abstract

843,038. Containers and launching means for self-propelled missiles. SHORT BROS. & HARLAND Ltd. Feb. 2, 1959 [Feb. 25, 1958],-No. 6055/58. Classes 9(1), 9(2) and 92 A self-propelled missile is provided with a rigid base member whereby the missile may be connected to a launching platform, the member being provided with spaced bosses which engage similarly spaced projections on the missile to locate the missile in the correct launching position. In addition a link comprising a shear pin anchors the missile to the member until severed by the missile leaving the launching platform. Preferably the member forms the base closure of a two-part container 21,22 for the missile as in Specification 843,037. The member 10 is an aluminium alloy disc with a central opening closed by a blow-out panel 11 and slotted lugs 12 project from the rear face of the disc to engage similar lugs on the platform (not shown). On the inner face of the disc are spaced bosses 13 each having a recess to receive similarly spaced projections 14 on the missile tail 15. A bolt 17 extends through the disc 10 into a socket 18 pivoted on a shear pin 19 passed through a lug 20 on the tail 15. The bolt 17 and lug 20 are so off-set from the projectile axis that the pin 19 is stressed in a plane passing through the centre of gravity of the missile. The casing 21,22 is provided with handles 225 and hoops 222, 223 facilitate rolling during stowage. Shock-absorbing material 23 protects the nose of the missile and the section 22 is provided with a lifting lug 224.
