Abstract

941,529. Missiles with landing means. L. BOLKOW, [trading as BOLKOW-ENTWICKLUNGEN KOMM.-GES.]. June 29, 1961 [July 1, 1960], No. 23516/61. Heading F3A. A missile comprises a nose 2 formed by shellhalves 2a, 2b adapted to open about hinges 4, thereby releasing parachutes 6, 7 and exposing a telescopic landing leg comprising a piston-rod 5a with piston 11 and a fluid containing cylinder 9. An explosive charge 17 which may be ignited for example when the propulsive charge of the missile burns out or by barometric means, removes a cap 18 thereby releasing the shellhalves. The parachute cords 13, 14 are attached to the cylinder 9 via staples 15 (not shown) at the rear of the missile so that on release the parachutes open and automatically hold the missile with its landing leg pointing downwards. A shear pin 20 retains rod 5a in position until contact with the ground, the piston 11 then forcing the damping fluid through bores 12 which are initially sealed by a suitable rupturable skin. A plate 16 prevents undue penetration by rod 5a when landing on soft ground. Alternatives to fluid as a shockabsorbing medium are mentioned and means may be provided to disengage the parachutes from the missile on landing.
